The other day I watched Richard (Donnie Darko) Kelly’s sci-fi slapstick satire Southland Tales. The reason why I watched it was because I’d recently bought it on DVD, and the reason why I’d recently bought it on DVD was because the Asda in Perry Barr were selling it for £3. In the days, weeks and months ahead this process may determine the future course and contents of my DVD collection.

Southland Tales received what you might call a fairly mixed critical response. The Guardian said it was “frustrating and finally rather pointless” while The Independent raised the stakes and declared it The Worst Film of 2007. I, by contrast, rather enjoyed it.

Like I said, a mixed response.
