Ooh, this is exciting…
The film director Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of my artistic heroes. I’ve written about him extensively and even interviewed him once (albeit via email). Sadly, though, he hasn’t made a film in over 23 years. Jodorowsky, you see, is something of an uncompromising artist and not the sort of four-quadrant guy who panders to test audiences or studio types. Over the years there have been a few false starts: a sort-of sequel to his seminal classic El Topo almost got off the ground (but didn’t), and – more recently – David Lynch was set to produce another new Jodorowsky film called King Shot, but that didn’t happen, either.
Jodorowsky is now in his 80s, and – like a lot of his fans – I’d pretty much given up hope on him making another film and was happy to make do with his comics (which I highly recommend, at least to those who are partial to some relentless brain-battering madness). I hadn’t even heard of The Dance of Reality, but here it is. And it’s not just some cruel IMDB flick-tease – this has got a proper trailer and everything.
Jodorowsky once said something along the lines of ‘Other artists make films with their eyes, I make films with my testicles.’ Appropriately enough, the trailer looks absolutely nuts…
