Madder, Badder

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm a fan of the German filmmaker Werner Herzog.  As much as I enjoy his documentary films like 'Grizzly Man', I'm glad to see he's got what us philistines like to call a Proper Movie coming out soon.  So far as I can tell, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans isn't a sequel to Abel Ferrara's superbly twisted sick-flick from 1992.  Rather, its a different story about a different cop who exists in the same fictional universe as Harvey Keitel's notorious high-protein squeegee man. From what I've seen so far, Herzog's Bad [...]

The Conquistador of the Useless

I watched Werner Herzog's documentary film Grizzly Man on DVD last night.  It's a beautiful and moving film and I recommend it highly, at least to those who like beautiful and moving films.  My good pal Pete Ashton told me on the oul Twitternets that I should also look out for Encounters at the End of the World ("Herzog in the desolate Antarctic.  Bliss."), so I guess I'll be adding that to my Lovefilm list, too. There are lots of reasons why I'm a big fan of Herzog.  He's a visionary filmmaker, a key figure in the German New Wave [...]

Technical Difficulties

Saturday night's Technical Difficulties show on Rhubarb Radio is now available as a podcast. The theme of the show was 'cats', so Danny played some cat-themed tunes, Jane discussed quantum physics favourite Schrodinger's Cat and Phil ate some cat food (live on air). I was in the studio, too, and said some things. Don't let that put you off.

8Bit High and Rising

My pal Pete Ashton's DJ set from last night's 8Bit Lounge is now available as a single 82MB mp3 download from here. Highlights for me included Triumphant by by the Modified Toy Orchestra and some beep-heavy cover versions of Kraftwerk's The Model, Weezer's Buddy Holly and (cough, cough) Europe's The Final Countdown (by Nullsleep, Nordloef and Moondabor, respectively).  And, before you ask, I hadn't heard of Nullsleep, Nordloef and Moondabor before last night (although I have mentioned the rather excellent Modified Toy Orchestra both here and here). An acquired taste, perhaps, but one worth acquiring.  That's assuming that you share [...]

Marvel, Disney & Howard The Mouse

From The Guardian: The Walt Disney empire is to buy the superheroes stable Marvel Entertainment for $4bn (£2.5bn) in a star-studded Hollywood deal that unites family names such as Mickey Mouse with lucrative characters including Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and the X-Men. I didn't see that coming.  Of course, if I did, then I would have invested heavily into Marvel stock last week, seeing as its value shot up by 26% today.  Hindsight, as ever, is a pain in the arse. A lot of comics fans seem quite horrified at the prospect of the House of Ideas being converted into [...]
